Do all European countries follow the same admission process?

No, every country has different entry requirements, testing systems and application processes. Before deciding which is best for you and your needs, you should keep an eye on variables such as visa requirements, language requirements, and university-specific entrance exams.

What is needed to study in Europe? What documents do I need for Europe?

Requirements for universities in Europe depend on whether you are a European or non-EU citizen.

To be accepted to a European university, all students need to be over 17 and have a high school degree or other relevant degree for those applying to Masters and PhD programs. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, although higher grades are necessary for competitive universities. Some universities may also request standardized test results like the SAT or GRE, as well as IELTS or TOEFL certificates for non-native English speakers.

Certain universities may also require candidates to take subject-specific entrance exams. Students from outside the EU have to apply for a student visa and often for a residence permit once in their country of choice. For this, besides a valid passport, they are required to show their university acceptance, proof of health insurance coverage, a bank account with sufficient funds to cover expenses during their studies, and proof of accommodation. A certificate proving knowledge of the local language or of English may also be required.



Countries that offer the most scholarships for undergraduate students are the UK, Germany, France, and Switzerland.

DAAD Scholarship in Germany - This fully funded scholarship for international students provides monthly payments of €850 for graduates.

‍Netherlands Government Scholarship - This is a programme that fully funds international students pursuing a master’s program and short courses.

‍ETH Zurich Excellence Masters Scholarships Switzerland - This scholarship covers the full cost of living and studying for master’s students.

‍Erasmus Mundus Programme - Awards about 15 students each year who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree or higher. The scholarship grants students €1,000 per month for the length of the 2-year program and a travel bonus.

Can I get a full scholarship in Europe?

Full scholarships are rarely awarded, although there are some, such as the DAAD scholarship in Germany, intended for master's and PhD students, or the Erasmus Mundus scholarship, which also offers several full scholarships each year.

Each country also has its own scholarships funded by the government or from private sources.


