Admissions & Application Process for German Universities

Many top-rated universities offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in English. If there's a major you want to study, it's probably also offered in English! While you can certainly get by in your studies with English only, knowing German is helpful for a more immersive, cultural experience. Many universities also offer German language courses which you can take alongside your other studies.

If required, you will also need to apply for a German student visa which costs €75. Students who are EU citizens do not need visas to study in Germany. You will also have to show proof of financial resources when applying for a student visa.

Cost of German university education: Fees & Scholarships

‍Public universities in Germany do not charge for tuition ever since 2014 for both EU and non-EU students. With the exception of the state of Baden-Württemberg, where non-EU international students have to pay tuition fees of 1,500 EUR per semester, you will only have to pay a small fee of around €150-€350 (US$170-$370) for administration costs. This makes Germany a more cost-effective choice to study compared to other countries where the tuition can be quite high. International students can also apply for scholarships to help with fees and with the cost of living.

How can I apply for a scholarship?



Fees and Scholarships for Master's and Doctorate

When it comes to Masters and PhD programs, foreign students can apply for Germany's DAAD scholarship programs to help with the costs of studying abroad. The DAAD scholarship provides students with a monthly payment. This hit €934 for masters students and €1,300 for doctoral students in 2024. Along with a one-time travel allowance, the DAAD often includes health and accident insurance. Specific programs may offer additional benefits and research grants.

There are other scholarships available as well through business foundations or religious organizations. Another option is to apply for a dual-studies program, in which a German company hires you to work for them while also funding your education. So it is possible to get paid for studying!

Applying for Scholarships

First, find a scholarship that is offered for your subject of study. Then complete the application form and submit the required documents which usually include academic transcripts, financial details, recommendation letters, and a personal essay. We can help with that!

Generally a minimum CGPA of 7 or 70% is required to apply to many universities and also for scholarships, but higher grades provide more scholarship opportunities and will give you an advantage. It is also important to show your passion and commitment for your desired course of study through a strong motivation letter.

While getting a full scholarship is rare, the DAAD provides a number of fully-funded scholarships each year for Masters and PhD students studying in Germany. To be eligible to apply for the DAAD scholarship, students need to have completed a bachelor's degree that lasted no more than six years and show proof of two years' work experience. Usually a high academic performance and solid language skills (German or English) are required, and the student's motivation and potential are also considered when the scholarships are awarded.

What other types of programs are there?

The Erasmus+ exchange program funds undergraduate students to study between 3-12 months in a country of choice.

Besides these government-funded programs, there are many private scholarships students can apply to. Good grades and a CV that shows dedication are an advantage.

Working as a student in Germany

It shouldn't be too hard to find a part-time job, especially if you speak German fluently. Online job sites advertise open positions while restaurants and shops may post opportunities directly in their windows. If you don't speak German, you could still find jobs in tutoring, babysitting, or hospitality. Jobs for students are also available on many university campuses.
