If you have thought about studying abroad but don’t yet know if it is the right choice for you, here are some things you can expect when studying abroad which might help you decide.

1. Expect to grow – in every way

The new experiences you encounter, having to navigate through a new culture, learning how to adapt, and taking care of yourself will help you mature in so many ways. Through things like managing your own finances or finding accommodation you will gain independence and self-reliance, and through decision-making and adapting to a new culture you will build confidence. The first steps might feel a bit shaky, but as you keep going, you will discover that you are capable of so much more than you first thought.

2. Maximize your opportunities

By looking for a university outside of your home country, the possibilities for subjects you can study are almost endless, and you can pursue a degree which is not offered in your home country or so unusual no teacher of yours has heard of it before. If you love science, you can major in Genomics at the University of Bologna, or if you are into music, you can get a bachelors degree in Jazz and Pop at ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands. You can also apply to universities that have exactly what you are looking for, whether that means state-of-the-art research labs, opportunities for student internships to specialize in your field, or highly performing sports teams you can join.

3. Find your style

Different countries have different teaching styles. Some focus mostly on group work and collaboration while others focus more on individual study and personal research. A quick country search on Youni’s website will help you discover which teaching styles different countries or universities usually follow, and you can choose to study at the one that fits you best.

4. Experience a new culture

It’s one of the reasons travelling to different countries on holiday is so enjoyable. However, when you live for an extended time in a different culture, you might be surprised that things aren’t exactly the same as in the foreign Netflix series you binge watched before going. In time, you might even find yourself adopting some of their ways. If you’re studying in Japan, you may bow your head slightly when greeting someone; in England, words like “pardon me,” “please,” and “thank you” will become an integral part of your vocabulary; and in Germany, you might discover that you really can make it to that appointment on time.

5. Become fluent in another language

By living in another country, you will be exposed to a different language, making it a great opportunity to become fluent (or at least improve) and add a new language to your CV. You won’t only be repeating verb conjugations like you did at school; you will be practicing everyday expressions and learning the local jokes. A second or third language can open up more work opportunities, both in your home country and in your host country.

6. Gain a global perspective

The world today is all about interconnectedness. Simply learning about a place is not the same as living there, getting to know the people, and experiencing the culture first hand. This kind of experiential learning – traveling to new places, tasting new foods, dancing to different music – is also fun to do. 🙂 As an international student, you will meet people from across the globe, not just from your host country. You will make friends and have experiences you could never have had at home.

7. Discover who you are

Sometimes it takes moving away from home and your peers to a new place to discover you can truly be. A new environment is an opportunity to start being who you’ve always wanted to be. You will be around new people who do not have any preconceived ideas about you. Get a job, learn to cook, find your way around a new town, and see how capable you are. Be brave and try new activities, campus clubs, hobby groups, or volunteer, and you may find hidden talents or even discover your life’s calling.

8. A better future

Studying abroad can broaden your job horizon after graduation. Many countries allow students to extend their student visa for a while after graduating to find work and gain experience. You might even find full-time employment in your career of choice in your host country. A foreign diploma and work experience abroad can also boost your attractiveness as an employee in your home country, especially if you learned a foreign language, while the international friends you made might help you network across the globe.

9. Have an adventure!

This might come last, but it is definitely not the least important. You might be comfortable with your usual routine, but getting out of your comfort zone and going off to study and explore a new country brings a different kind of personal satisfaction. Studying abroad has the advantage that you get to travel and have fun with a purpose. You will come back with a university degree and countless wonderful experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.

10. Short-term study abroad

If you’ve read this but still think that living for three or four years in another country is not for you, at least consider doing a semester abroad program. All of the advantages above still apply to an extent, and the experience can be just as amazing.
